Eclipse V1 - Main Arm Replacement

Eclipse V1 - Main Arm Replacement

1. First lay your umbrella on its side on a pair of saw horses or a table. You will need to remove the Canopy, so start off by releasing the Top Stay #18 where it connects to the lower Large Strop #16.

2. To access the Canopy securing bolt on the Main Arm #14, swing the mast away from the Canopy. Remove the remaining bolts from the lower Arms #1 and remove the four screws holding the Canopy straps near the Top Hub #11.

3. Remove the Bottom Hub #6 sticker with a razor blade and the four bolts underneath with a 5mm hex key.

4. Removing the four bolts will release the Tube Locator #7. Push the cable anchor out the bottom of the Tube Locator and wrap with a few layers of wide Cello tape around the cable as close to the end as possible.

5. Wrapping the cable will stop it from fraying when cut. Wrap the end of a similar diameter rope (length two or three meters) with tape and secure them both together with another piece of tape joining the two (see below).

6. Hook out the cable from the top of the Main Arm where it connects to the Top Hub and gently pull the cable at the same time as feeding in the rope. You may need to help it pass through the Top Hub when you start seeing the tape pass under the plastic ridge in front of the plastic Large End Fitting #15.

7. Remove the Hub Tube #7 from the Top Hub #11 by loosening the four internal bolts. Remove the six bolts on the outer edge of the Top Hub nearest to the Main Arm as pictured below but only loosen (do not completely undo) the two bolts that are remaining furthest away from the Main Arm.

8. This will allow you to open the Top Hub and remove the Main Arm without having to disrupt the positioning of the remaining Arms #1 and internal Top Hub Pulley #13.

9. Remove the final barrel bolt securing the Main Arm #14 to the Slider Car #19 and retrieve the pulleys #28 and #38 inside both ends of the damaged Main Arm. Detach the cable from the temporary rope leaving the rope hanging from the Top Hub and pull the cable from the damaged Main Arm.

10. Place your new Main Arm #14 next to the mast, taking note of the small threaded hole near the end. This hole is for one of the Canopy bolts and it is a good check to see if the arm is the correct way around, it must be facing the slider car #19. Now while holding the cable to keep the tension, slide the Slider Car towards the top of the mast. This will give you some extra length of cable to assist you in the next step.

11. Stand the new Main Arm upright on the plastic Large End Fitting #15 and feed the cable downwards and out the other end. You may need to get help from a second person when the cable gets near the plastic end to hook it past the end fitting while gently pushing the cable from the top end. This can be done of course while horizontal.

12. Position the Main Arm next to the mast and look for the Canopy hole as discussed above, then place the pulley #38 in the plastic Large End Fitting #15 as pictured below in between the cable and the Top Hub.

13. Use the metal pin from the damaged Main Arm #14 and knock it back into position through the plastic Large End Fitting and pulley. Find something heavy to use underneath to prevent putting too much hammering pressure on the plastic Large End Fitting. Reattach the rope you left positioned through the Top Hub earlier to the end of the cable.

14. Like before gently guide the rope and cable through the Top Hub. You can help the cable around the internal pulley by using your hex key through the hole in the top half of the hub. Once through push the Main Arm back into position and squeeze both halves of the Top Hub together again.

15. Replace and tighten all the external bolts and reattach the hub tube using the four longer bolts. Remove the rope from the cable and push the cable back through the tube locator. You may need to remove some excess tape but leave at least the first layer of wrapping to help the cable keep its shape.

16. Make a new anchor at the end of the cable, like the one you cut off, once the tube locator is in position and check that the cable is not wrapped around any of the arms before securing the tube locator back onto the bottom hub.

17. The last important step is to secure the Main Arm to the slider car. Position the cable and pulley as pictured then line up all the holes and drop in one of the remaining barrel bolts. Don’t forget to replace the hub sticker.

18. Continue to reattach the top and bottom stays then stand the umbrella on its spigot. It should open and close as normal. Replace the Canopy whilst the frame is vertical and secure all Canopy anchor screws into position.
