Eclipse V1 - Replacing The Winder Drum

Eclipse V1 - Replacing The Winder Drum

REPLACING THE WINDER DRUM

If you find there is an excess of Cable hanging from the Mast #27 and or the Winder is not working then the internal anchor point on the Winder Drum #32 is more than likely broken.
1. To confirm that this is the problem you can remove the Mast Cap #23 and look at the Swivel Pulleys #26. If you find one pulley with Cable running through it and the other empty then this is exactly what has happened.

2. Neatly fold the Canopy by pulling the fabric from in-between the Arms #1 and interleaving each panel, then secure with the strap. This will protect the fabric from getting
pinched between the Arms #1 when you lay the umbrella on its side. With the umbrella on two saw horses or on a table remove the black Winder Housing #31.

3. You will find the Gear Spindle, to release it use a ruler to protect the Mast #27 and pry off the black button with a flat head screwdriver.

4. You will find a small hex bolt behind the button, this bolt has been applied with Loctite so take care not to ruin the head. If you can’t shift it stop and use a hot air gun to soften the Loctite and break the bond.
Place a screwdriver in the hole and push out the Gear Spindle, the screwdriver will keep the internal Winder Drum #32 from moving.

5. Pull out the Stay Block #38 with a clamp or second person, then using a long thin rod push from the top of the Mast #27 the internal Winder Drum #32 out the bottom.
A broom stick or two will work if you have nothing else available to use as your long rod.

6. The Winder Drum #32 will fall out the bottom for the Mast #27 and will look like the one pictured above with a broken anchor point. On rare occasions the rope or the knot itself may fail.

7. Untie the large knot on your new Winder Drum #32, take note how it is tied there will also be some pictures a bit later. Oil the rotating parts with a thin oil or silicon spray. Tie the end of the Rope to your long pole,
I have drilled a screw into the end of the pole pictured to act as a hook as well as a tie of point. Push the Rope end back up the Mast #27 and out the top then drag the Winder Drum #32 to follow it.

8. To help with access remove the long bolt that anchors the “P” Fitting #25 to the top of the Mast #27, now you will be able to see the top of the Winder Drum #32.

9. Unfortunately there isn’t enough room to successfully make a permanent knot so thread the Rope through the anchor point of the new Winder Drum #32
and make a simple knot to hold the end in position.

10. Remove the Top Stay #18 from the Top Bracket #22 and while keeping tension on the Cable slide the Mast #27 downwards until the Slider Car #19 hits the Stop.
You will need to support the bottom end now that most of the Mast #27 is on one side of the Slider Car #19. This will give you enough length of Rope and Cable to push the
Winder Drum #32 down and out the bottom of the Mast #27 to tie a permanent knot.

11. Before you push the Winder Drum #32 down the Mast #27 tie a piece of temporary rope or string to the “P” Fitting #25 to pull the Cable end back up.
Secondly make sure you haven’t tangled the rope and Cable. If you need even more length you can remove the Stop in the Mast #27 and push the Mast #27 down even further.

12. Follow the sequence below to retie the knot, once you have passed the end of the rope through the loop work out the slack and pull it tight. When replacing the Winder Drum #32 have the knot
side closer to the Rotating Locking Pin #36 as pictured, this will place the hole in the top of the Winder Drum #32 in the correct position once inside the Mast #27.

13. Place a screwdriver in the hole in the Mast #27 where the Gear Spindle sits and slowly pull the “P” Fitting #25 back up the Mast #27. When you see the screwdriver move, the
Winder Drum #32 will be in just about the right spot. Remove the screwdriver and pull the rope very slowly until you can drop in the
Gear Spindle into the corresponding hole in the Winder Drum #32 inside the Mast #27.
14. Check that there are no twists in the Cable or internal Rope and it resembles the picture on the right,
secure the “P” Fitting #25 to the inside of the Mast #27.

15. Now you can slide the Mast #27 back to its original position and begin reassembly of the Top Stay #18 and Gear Spindle. Once secure stand the umbrella back up on its Spigot #33 and test.
When the umbrella is open horizontally take a look down the Mast #27 to check again for twists in the Cable and Rope then once more when the umbrella is closed again. If you find it is twisted lay the umbrella
down again detach the “P” Fitting #25 and untwist the cable accordingly. Sometimes it needs to run through a cycle to settle itself. Don’t forget to replace the Mast Cap #23 to keep out the weather.
