Older Nova Rivet Upgrade
If you are finding that the screws on the lower hub, and or the black collar at the top of the
mast are missing or unwinding themselves over time, you can use rivets to replace the screws
for a long lasting solution. We are using rivets for all newly made Nova umbrellas since 2015.
This is no caveat, the older masts may not have an offset hub, meaning the screw holes were drilled at each quarter. The pictures above show offset masts where the screw or rivet holes were drilled into the strengthening internal channels the run the length of the mast on the inside. (See picture below)

NB - If you have an older 5 meter Square Nova where the screws are drilled evenly at each quarter the following procedure will not work. Due to the rivets not being inside the channels the 5m internal slider will hit the back end of the rivet and cause the umbrella to not wind all the way up. A different solution will be needed. For all the other sizes of the Nova the internal slider does not pass this point so it is safe to use rivets.
It is quite a simple job and can be completed with the umbrella upright and open, no need to lay the umbrella on its side or remove the roof.
You will notice in the photo above the current Nova umbrellas have two rivets installed on the lower side of the hub. These holes were made by a CNC machine and it is quite difficult to achieve this level of finish on top of a ladder freehand so I recommend only installing one rivet in your existing screw hole.

achieve this level of finish on top of a ladder freehand so I recommend only
installing one rivet in your existing screw hole. Firstly one at a time remove each
existing screw, enlarge the screw hole to 6mm and install the new rivet. You
will find the drill will jump forward a fraction when it enters the channel
signaling you to stop. You can also put a small amount of tape on the drill
bit at 15mm from the tip to keep you from drilling too deeply.
The size of the recommended
replacement rivet is: 6mm with a depth of 15mm (aluminium).
Behind the arms is another row of
screws installed in the lower hub, these can be a little more difficult to reach. To access these screws the arm āUā channel in front of each screw can be
removed by first removing the bolts on the underside of the hub plate and
lifting both the support arm and āUā channel from the hub.
These rivets are not seen behind the arms so you can strengthen the umbrella by using the existing hole plus adding an extra hole 15mm above it, therefore adding two rivets. The new hole must be directly above the existing one to enable the rivet to sit neatly in the internal channel.
There are also screws that secure the black collar to the top of the mast. These can also be removed and replaced to make sure this part stays in place. The mast collar helps prevent the canopy from twisting in the wind and often the screws are missing on older frames without rivets.
