Nova HD - Removing the Internal Mechanism

How to Remove the Internal Mechanism

To repair the internal mechanism of the Nova you must slide the telescopic (thinner square profile) upper mast out the bottom of the main mast (round profile). The gear and the threaded rod will be attached to the telescopic mast and all will slide out in one piece.

This can be achieved by removing the bolts joining the top plate holding the arms to the telescopic mast.

The easiest way to do this is to loosen and remove the bolts when the umbrella is open which will give you easier access. Then leaving the telescopic mast inside the square mount pictured above close the umbrella, securely strap, then lean it over to horizontal to continue work. If the bolts cannot be removed via the above method you will need to whilst the umbrella is in the closed horizontal position detach each arm at the top plate ā€œUā€ brackets above and below each set of bolts to gain access.

The next step is to remove the spigot re-enforcing plates found in the bottom of the mast. There will be small securing bolts either side of the very bottom of the main mast that will need to be removed to release them.

Using a long hooked object of about a meter in length you can slide the plates out from the mast.

Now remove the four bolts either side of the winder handle. This will release the internal gear and allow you to slide all the internal mechanisms out the bottom of the mast.

Using the telescopic mast to help you, push downwards until you see the gear box protrude from the bottom of the mast.  You will find that the internal mechanisms will all come out in one piece, try to avoid bending the threaded rod, support it where necessary as you slide the internals all the way out.

If you are experiencing a free spinning handle the problems to check for are outlined below.

1. A broken cog tooth inside the winder gear.

2. A broken bolt that holds the threaded rod to the gear box.
