NOVA HD - Canopy Replacement Instructions

NOVA HD CANOPY REPLACEMENT INSTRUCTIONS

These instructions provide guidance on removing the canopy of a Nova HD umbrella and

replacing with a new canopy.

TOOLS REQUIRED

·         2 x Phillips Head screw drivers

·         Pliers

·         2 x 4mm Allan keys

·         Stanley Knife

·         Small step ladder

·         Large platform-type ladder

PREPARATION

·         The simplest method to replace the canopy is to do so while the umbrella is still in place.

·         However, this requires working on ladders. Care must be taken to ensure all safety precautions normally associated with working at heights.

·         The ground surface beneath the umbrella should be clean and drop-cloths or similar covering used to prevent the new canopy from making contact with the ground to avoid it getting dirty.

·         2-3 people required to safely carry out this job.

METHOD

·         The first step is to determine which model of umbrella you have. There have been some changes to the canopy attachment method over the years.

·         Open the umbrella and examine how the canopy is attached to the ribs at the top (near the top hub/crown).

·         Old umbrellas will have the canopy attached with “through-bolts” that require undoing from the topside and underside of the ribs.

·         Newer umbrellas will have the screw head on the topside of rib only.

1- Older style umbrella with through-bolt visible from underside

2- Newer umbrella with screw on top of the rib/arm

* Next, slightly close the umbrella and undo all the Velcro tabs holding the canopy to the mid-point of the ribs.

3- Undo Velcro tabs

* Close the umbrella and undo the canopy bolts at the end of the ribs

4- Canopy bolts at end of ribs

* Partially open the umbrella, enough so that you can access upper canopy bolts from the top
and the bottom if needed.

5- Partially open the umbrella to allow easy access to upper canopy bolts.

* Using a large ladder roll the roof up so you can access the top canopy bolts.
* Undo all bolts and remove the roof.
* If the canopy is very old, there is a chance that it may have shrunk slightly, making it difficult
to remove over the round top hub plate/disc. If this is the case use a stanley knife to cut the
canopy slightly to allow removal.

Dressing The Replacement Canopy On The Frame
·         Before dressing the replacement canopy on the umbrella, take the opportunity to clean the frame. It is especially important to clean along the top of the ribs and
any other parts of the umbrella that make contact with the canopy, otherwise your new canopy may look very dirty very quickly.

·         Clean the frame with mineral turpentine for best results.

·         Once the frame is clean, fully close the umbrella.

·         Working on a large ladder throw the canopy over the top of the frame.

·         Align the canopy seams with the long ribs.

·         Make sure not to let go of the roof when dressing over the top hub as you don’t want the canopy to fall down the frame.

Make sure you have 1 bolt in place before pulling the roof over the top hub.

·         The opening at the top of the canopy is only slightly bigger than the top hub. A bit of force may be required to pull it over the top hub disc.

·         Once the canopy is over the disc, attach the other upper canopy bolts. Check again that the seams are aligned correctly with the umbrella rib

and that the lower canopy bolts align with the correct shape of the umbrella.

·         Attach the lower canopy bolts at the end of the ribs and then the Velcro tabs.
